Manchester United players reportedly made jest of their interim manager, Ralf Rangnick.
The players did not turn up in training after the first team squad said to have been given a day off.
The players were amused by an embarrassing mix-up which saw Rangnick turn up for training having forgotten he had given the players a day off.
The former RB Leipzig boss was said to have arrived at Carrington training ground on Tuesday morning, less than 12 hours after his misfiring side defeated Aston Villa 1-0 to progress to the next round of the FA Cup.
The interim manager arrived for work only to discover the United’s training complex was virtually empty, before beating a hasty retreat.
A source who spoke to the Daily Mail said: “He called inside from his car to ask where the testers were and was reminded the players were off. Then he drove away. It was the talk of the training ground. The players were all joking about it.”
Manchester United will play Villa, with a recent criticism of the players by Cristiano Ronaldo likely to still be ringing in the ears of his teammates.
Ronaldo had questioned the commitment of his team-mates earlier in the week, insisting that they must work hard to stand any chance of finishing well in the Premier League this season.
